Check out this weekend’s preview for the UFC women’s flyweight clash, Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk, with full betting tips and predictions.
The vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight championship will be up for grabs at UFC 231 as Valentina Shevchenko and former UFC Women’s Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk go head-to-head in the co-main event.
Shevchenko is the overwhelming favourite coming into the fight, something perhaps owing to the history of both fighters and Shevchenko traditionally being the bigger fighter.
Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk Betting Tips
The oddsmakers have Shevchenko as the favourite to wi this contest by some clear distance. Betting on the Kyrgyzstani–Peruvian professional mixed martial artist to take down her Polish counterpart gives slim odds of 2/7.
Backing Jedrzejczyk to cause an upset, winning by any method, proves the higher risk-higher reward bet with an 11/4 return.
Shevchenko is ranked as the number one strawweight fighter in the UFC, so we see no reason to go against the line of betting on this event.
Shevchenko to win outright
Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk fought each other in kickboxing matches three times back in the 2000s, with Shevchenko winning all of them. Perhaps this is why she is the overwhelming bookie’s favourite coming into UFC 231.
Jedrzejczyk has improved her overall fighting game leaps and bounds over the years, however, so this will be no walk in the park for Shevchenko. The Belarusian needs to cut Joanna off in the Octagon in order to stifle her movement, as the former Strawweight champ is a marvel in this area.
Jedrzejczyk to win outright
The longest reigning UFC Women’s Strawweight champion to date, ‘Joanna Violence’ has carved a reputation as a fearsome striker in the Octagon. She defended the belt five times before losing it to Rose Namajunas, and again losing to ‘Thug Rose’ in a closely contested rematch.
Jedrzejczyk will need to employ a perfect combination of movement, pressure and distance fighting if she is to beat Shevchenko, who will undoubtedly have the strength advantage. That means Joanna will likely come off second best when it comes to fighting in the pocket or clinching, so she needs to stay on the outside.
Shevchenko to win via stoppage
Despite Shevchenko’s background and reputation as an elite striker, she has more MMA victories via submission than via TKO/KO. Her most recent submission victory came in February in her UFC Flyweight debut against Priscilla Cachoeira, where Shevchenko won via rear-naked choke in the second round.
Jedrzejczyk is a far more accomplished fighter, however, and has some of the best takedown defence in women’s MMA. Because of that, we believe that Shevchenko is more likely to win via decision rather than via stoppage.
Fight to go the distance
The majority of both Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk’s fights in the UFC have gone to the judge’s scorecards, which is indicative of their strategic approach to their fights. While Shevchenko may have a power advantage, this is unlikely to be a major influence on the fight given her more point- scoring approach to the game.
The same can be said for Jedrzejczyk, whose striking is more the demoralising, chop-the-opponent- own type rather than the one punch power often seen in some fighters. All of that means a bet on the fight going the distance could be a good one to make, and is one of the more reliable betting lines in this fight.
Fight Prediction – Shevchenko via decision
We think this will be a close fight where both fighters will have their moments. However, Shevchenko is an absolute master at counter fighting and not bowing to pressure from even the most elite fighters, and this will make all the difference as she edges out what will be a competitive fight.
