UFC Fight Night 132 Cerrone vs. Edwards Fight Preview & prediction

UFC Fight Night 132 in Singapore will be headlined by a classic veteran versus prospect clash as Donald Cerrone goes head-to-head with Leon Edwards. It is a huge opportunity for Edwards to well- and-truly make his presence felt in the UFC while for Cerrone, a win will show fans and critics that he is still a top tier fighter.

Cerrone vs. Edwards Fight Preview

Hailing from England, Edwards has shown consistent improvement during his three-year UFC tenure, and has proven himself to be one of the best British prospects around. He will be best served by taking advantage of Cerrone’s ‘slow starter’ reputation by coming out raging from the opening bell and wearing Cerrone down with solid strikes.

While Edwards has a strong ground game, Cerrone may have an edge when it comes to grappling, so it is important for Edwards to keep the fight on the feet.

For Cerrone to take out the win, he needs to take Edwards to the ground, especially in the early stages of the fight where he has often been on the losing end of striking exchanges. By taking the fight to the ground early on, Cerrone will be able to dictate the pace of the fight, which will win him the first round and put him in a strong position for the rest of the fight.

Donald Cerrone Form & Fight Record

After a tough time of it, Cowboy added another win to his name in his last outing against Medeiros. Prior to headlining this main event the American welterweight athlete came up short against Till, Lawler and Masvidal, which put a serious dent in his career. It comes as no surprise then that he’s now typecast as a Fight Night performer and no longer a main card star. A win over Edwards will see his reemerge in the elite bracket and hopefully more air-time on the bigger UFC shows.

Leon Edwards Form & Fight Record

Rocky has learned well by calling out the big boys at 170 lbs to sell himself in to Dana White as a contender within this division. The UFC chief sees potential with the British fighter, who after losing only twice in his pro career has been on a run of hot wins to reach this personal milestone. Three of those victories have been by decision, the remaining two by submission and TKO – so if we take anything from this fight record at all it’s that Edwards is as versatile in getting the win as he is durable over three rounds. He’ll need a full tank against Cerrone, who is famed for his cardio.

Cerrone vs. Edwards Prediction

Both fighters have stellar striking and solid ground games making this match-up a tough one to call. Cerrone hasn’t been having all his own way in the Octagon in his most recent appearances, however this is no reason to rule out Cowboy from pulling off an upset. The stamina and heart is there, but questions will be asked over his ability to outperform the younger Edwards.

Our prediction for this UFC fight is Edwards taking a big first round, which will make all the difference as he earns a close decision over the veteran. Cowboy will no doubt land a flurry of signature kicks but Edward’s defence should be strong enough to nullify these attacks.

Outcome: Edwards by decision.
