Tony Ferguson form and UFC fight record

At the forth time of asking UFC fans will finally be treated to the lightweight showdown which pits Tony Ferguson against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The title is on the line so to is the prospect of facing former champion Conor McGregor in the far distance. McGregor was stripped of his lightweight title by Dana White as confirmed in a live press conference earlier this month. Timing and weight cut issues have delayed this bout until now. In April we expect to see sparks fly when the Eagle and El Cucuy collide to reveal who is the true king at 155lbs.

Win Edson Barboza Submission (D’Arce choke) The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber Finale December 11, 2015
Win Josh Thomson Decision (unanimous) UFC Fight Night: Mir vs. Duffee July 15, 2015

Ferguson has an almost-clean record entering into UFC 223; the interim champ has 23 wins, 10 of which by striking. Only three fighters have stopped him in his pro career. But look at this last five wins and who he has beaten: ‘El Cucuy’ has done away with big hitters Kevin Lee and Rafael Dos Anjos. The American clearly favours taking opponents to the ground and working a submission, although this shouldn’t overshadow an impressive his 43% knockout ratio.

Khabib Nurmagomedov form and fight record

Khabib is 25-0 on record, presenting a psychological edge over Ferguson when they meet for the belt. The Russian UFC star has a well-rounded portfolio of mixed martial arts skills; 1/3 of his wins are the result of TKO/KO, decision and submission.

Win Edson Barboza Decision (unanimous) UFC 219 December 30, 2017
Win Michael Johnson Submission (kimura) UFC 205 November 12, 2016

Win Rafael dos Anjos Decision (unanimous) UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne April 19, 2014
Win Pat Healy Decision (unanimous) UFC 165 September 21, 2013

Recent evidence of The Eagle’s adaptability to defeat his opponents by any means necessary can be seen against Barboza (points), Jonhson (kimura) and Horcher (punches). Khabib had gone the distance in three of his last five fights. Like his current foe, Khabib has also claimed victory over current welterweight title contender Rafael Dos Anjos in the Octagon.

UFC 223 prediction for Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

Last time out Tony Ferguson scraped a win by the skin of his teeth. Kevin Lee tapped out moments before dominating the fight with heavy blows to the head and body, and vicious takedowns. In stark contrast Khabib Nurmagomedov totally manhandled Edson Barboza from start to finish is his last outing. Khabib claimed he wanted the full five rounds to prove to every fight fan – including Dana White – that his fitness and weight issues are behind him. And he’s a very hungry contender. Watch out 155 lbs-ers.

We are sensing that Khabib’s absence will drive him to finish this main event before five rounds with venom. Ferguson, for all his guile and experience, won’t settle under the avalanche of pressure from The Eagle. Our UFC prediction is for Khabib is to enforce ground and pound manoeuvres until an opening appears and the onslaught leads to a stoppage.

Then, Conor McGregor, perhaps..?
