UFC 222 Prediction: Max Holloway vs Frankie Edgar

Current featherweight champion Max Holloway headlines the upcoming UFC 222 main event this Spring. The top-ranked 145-pound fighter will defend his title against Octagon veteran Frankie Edgar, a bout scheduled for March 3, 2018 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Also featuring on this UFC 222 card is the middleweight bout between C.B. Dolloway and Hector Lombard, in addition to the heavyweight contest of Stefan Struve vs Andrei Arlovski.

The fight was originally intended to take place four months earlier at UFC 218, although regrettably Edgar pulled out of the match-up due to an eye injury. Now finally The Answer, (22-5-1), a former lightweight king, gets another bite at the cherry. Hawaiian born Holloway (19-3), the reigning UFC featherweight champion, is out to earn a 13th consecutive win in the UFC. This will also double up as a third consecutive win as champion in his division, after achieving back-to-back title defences over Brazilian Octagon veteran Jose Aldo.

Edgar has his own legend to build upon in UFC 222; the native New Jerseyite has the opportunity to become only the fifth fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two separate weight classes. Aged 36, Edgar knows time is ticking and his window of keeping up with the elite pool of fighters at 145 pounds is shortening by the day. By defeating “Blessed” Holloway, he can realistically claim to extend his career at the top end of this competitive division.

Max Holloway Form and Fight Record

Holloway’s recent win over Aldo was his 12th consecutive victory, which is the fifth-longest in UFC records. We have to travel back as far as 2013 when he lost out to current lightweight champion Conor McGregor. At the time Blessed was the only fighter to have taken McGregor the distance. Since then he has been on a total rampage and seen off challengers left, right and centre. His superb form has earned him a brace over legend Jose Aldo, both via knockout, whilst he finished off hot contender Anthony Pettis in similar fashion.

Frankie Edgar Form and Fight Record

Edgar is 7-2 since transitioning to fight at featherweight in 2013. During this tenure he lost a tight decision to Jose Aldo in a title match-up, a minor career setback at the time. The New Jersey native brings a two-fight win streak into the bout, and from his last four victories he has put away Yair Rodriguez, Jeremy Stephens, Chad Mendez and Urijah Faber. Edgar has gone the distance in three of his last five UFC fights.

Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar Prediction

The beauty of watching Max Holloway is the momentum that builds gradually throughout his fights, and then the gears click into place and pandemonium commences. We’ve seen it happen time and time again with his matches against Aldo and Pettis – he seems to improve as the fight goes on. Always finishing on a high. Aged just 26, Blessed has the gift of youth on his side, despite and already colourful career in which he has tasted defeat along the way.

Edgar gives away 10 years in this fight. He will feel every day of it when the combinations of blows come raining down from the champ. Even as a quick mover inside the Octagon and proprietor of agile and fierce striking, The Answer is not the fighter he once was. Whether he can match Holloway at a high impact fight is up for debate. Some may argue that his time has been and gone.

Our UFC 222 prediction is for Max Holloway to retain his featherweight crown and dismantle challenger Edgar in under five rounds. Placing a stake on Max Holloway to win outright, or for Edgar to be stopped by KO/TKO is a sensible move.
