Although Tavares is a solid striker with proven knockout power, it is imperative that he take Adesanya to the ground if he is to win. A former top ranked kickboxer, Adesanya has one of the elite striking games out of any fighter on the UFC roster. However, as we accurately predicted prior to his last fight, Adesanya’s ground game is lacking, something that Vettori exploited in their match.

Tavares needs to get up close to Adesanya and take the New Zealander down, where he may be able to submit him with relative ease.

UFC on Fox: Poirier vs. Gaethje April 14, 2018 Win Marvin Vettori Decision (split)

Wu Lin Feng: E.P.I.C. 4 May 28, 2016 Win Murad Kuramagomedov TKO (punches)

In order for Adesanya to extend his unbeaten record, he needs to use his reach advantage and strike from range. Although he has displayed good takedown defence in his MMA career, Adesanya was taken down a few times by Vettori in his last fight, which showed that fighters with solid wrestling should be able to get the job done.

This means that Adesanya needs to use constant movement and diverse strikes in order to keep Tavares on the back foot. That way, Adesanya should be able to impose his will and finish Tavares.

Adesanya vs. Tavares Prediction

These two athletes have featured on a card together once before but under different circumstances. The event was Piorier vs Geathje, both Adensanya and Tavares pulled off wins via a decision and TKO respectively. Based on recent performances, it’s Tavares that edges it on paper.

Even though Tavares is a solid veteran, his love for striking will be his undoing. Adesanya will have his takedown defence on point and will use his elite striking to stop Tavares early in the match.

Adesanya via TKO in Round 2.
