It’s no shock that Burnett is being tipped to retain his title in this bantamweight affair, given the circumstances of his journey so far, compared with the rollercoaster ride that is Donaire’s legacy to date. The two guys are on different paths in their career with Burnett dining out on his prime years whilst Donaire is fast approaching the final hurrah.

The man from Belfast is in a rich vein of form at 118 lbs, stringing together 19 wins without a loss. Nine of those victories have come via KO/TKO, which gives the young protege a modest 47% knockout rate. Burnett’s burning assets though are his stamina, work rate and ability to land clean punches to unsettle his opponents’ rhythm. Expect those skills to shine through this weekend.

At the time of writing Donaire is still on the fight card, although the rumour mill is pointing to his goliath drop in weight as a hurdle for whether he even makes the ring walk. Paul Butler has been brought in as the stand-in opponent. After reeling from a phenomenal performance against Frampton earlier this year, the Filipino Flash is dropping two four kilograms to challenge Burnett at his natural weight.

But unlike his adversary on the night, Donaire’s career has already peaked. four of his five professional losses have occurred in his last eleven fights.

Burnett vs. Donaire Prediction

This is Burnett’s fight to lose. His physical fitness and form of late have proved he can mix it with the elite fighters in the bantamweight division. Backing him to advance to the semi’s is an obvious but unrewarding bet. A late stoppage in his favour, or even the fight not to go the distance, could have more appeal in terms of the lay of the odds.

Both weight loss an form taken into consideration, it’s going to be a tough gig for the visiting veteran. Although he remarked that the Donaire we saw against Frampton was the best he’s ever been in the ring, that momentum is seldom repeated by slight-built fighters in their mid-thirties. Whilst Pacquiao is the go-to reference, he is the exception to this rule.

We’re leaning towards Burnett winning late in the fight by TKO, possibly pushing for a unanimous points decision.
