Check out our online preview for Dos Anjos vs. Usman, scheduled for Sat, 1st December at the Pearl Theatre, Nevada.
The Ultimate Fighter 28 finale will feature a main event that could determine the next Welterweight title challenger as Rafael Dos Anjos goes up against Kamaru Usman. Usman is heading into the bout with an eight-fight win streak, but Dos Anjos will be by far his biggest challenge in his MMA career to date.
Dos Anjos makes favourite for winning this welterweight clash, and whilst Usman comes in as the role of the underdog he shouldn’t be written off outright. Check out our possible fight outcomes for betting tips below.
Dos Anjos to win outright
Although he is coming off a loss to Colby Covington, Dos Anjos remains a tough test for any fighter at 170 pounds. A major part of Dos Anjos’ success in the Octagon has come due to his ability to implement an aggressive and highly diverse game plan against his opponents.
He will need to do the same against Usman, who has a clear size advantage in this match up. Usman also possesses a lot of power in his strikes, so Dos Anjos will need to keep out of range of his punches if he is to win this fight.
Usman to win outright
Having won eight fights in a row, Usman currently has the longest win streak of all active fighters in the Welterweight division. A win against Dos Anjos will likely put Usman second in line to Covington for a title shot, so he will almost certainly be on his ‘A-game’ against Dos Anjos.
Usman’s major key to victory has been his wrestling, which he most recently showed against Sean Strickland and Emil Meek. However, he also displayed solid striking in his most recent victory against Demian Maia, whose striking is average at best. Usman will need his strength and athleticism to get Dos Anjos against the face and take him to the ground, where he can wear Dos Anjos down and claim the victory.
Dos Anjos to win via submission
A third-degree black belt in BJJ, Dos Anjos possesses an underrated submission game. His most recent submission win was against Neil Magny at UFC 215, which came after Dos Anjos knocked him down with a leg kick.
Dos Anjos has not tended to purposely take fighters down to look for submissions, however, and it is unlikely he will do the same against a proven grappler like Usman. While there is always a chance Dos Anjos will submit Usman, we simply think there are better lines to bet on in this fight.
Fight to go the Distance
Both Usman and Dos Anjos have shown that they have the ability to finish fights at any time. However, the overwhelming majority of both fighters’ matches in the UFC have gone to the judges’ scorecards, even those that were five rounders.
While each fighter has clear strengths over the other, we don’t see anything that screams “easy finish”. That leads us believe that a bet on this fight going the full five rounds may be a good one to place here.
Our Prediction – Usman via decision
Dos Anjos is a top fighter, and he will have his moments in this fight. However, this is Usman’s time, and he will out grapple Dos Anjos and assert himself as the top contender at 170 pounds.
