Mikey Garcia made short work of contender Sergey Lipinets in their clash on Saturday night in Texas. The American dismantled his opponent with a vicious knockout in round eight.
After moving up to 140 to face off against Lipinets, Garcia excelled at this weight class and looked the part of a champion throughout the majority of the fight.
It was touch and go early on when Garcia was put through his paces by the wiley Kazakhstani-Russian boxer, who scored a knockdown in round two. Had he managed to spot a chink in the armour of the otherwise impenetrable Garcia..?
It didn’t take long for the American to answer back, regaining composure within the round and steadily piling on pressure with a collection of pot-shots to the head and body of Lipinets.
Garcia raged forwarded with a solid display founded on pragmatic footwork and head movement. He chose his moment to take down Lipinets in round eight, by way of a killer body shot.
The referee called it before the full 12 rounds with no arguments made from either fighter. Garcia had bagged another victory to add to his clean fight record.
The stylish American boxer also made history in the fight by becoming only the third champion to earn a belt in the 126, 130, 135 and 140-pound weigh divisions. Only Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao have equalled this achievement.
