Junior dos Santos vs. Tai Tuivasa Prediction, Preview and Tips

Check out our tips and predictions for the upcoming UFC main event this weekend: Dos Santos vs. Tuivisa, scheduled for Sunday, 2nd December in Adelaide, Australia.

Fight Preview

The upcoming UFC Fight Night 142 event in Adelaide, Australia is set to be headlined by a heavyweight match up between durable veteran Junior dos Santos and rising star Tai Tuivasa.

Tuivasa will have the home advantage in the fight, but will face his biggest test to date in former UFC Champion dos Santos.

Betting Picks and Tips

It might surprise the average punter to see that home hero Tuivisa is pitted as the outsider for this heavyweight clash. Dos Santos, short on Octagon appearances in recent years, makes the betting favourite with odds of 1.22 outright. Here are out picks for possible fight outcomes to inspire your betting card this weekend.

Dos Santos to win outright

With his long and decorated history in the UFC, it is no surprise that JDS is the favourite, albeit slightly, in this bout. While he won his first nine fights in the UFC, the Brazilian has alternated wins and losses since December 2012.

He is coming off a win against Blagoy Ivanov, where he used a highly strategic approach fighting on the outside to chop Ivanov down and win a one-sided decision victory. He will need to employ a similar approach to beat Tuivasa, who possesses devastating power in his strikes and is a huge threat up close.

Tuivasa to win outright

He may only have three fights in the UFC to date, but Tuivasa’s KO power, casual nature as well as his theatrics (most famous of which is his penchant for drinking beer from a shoe following his victories) has quickly made him a fan favourite.

The west Sydney native is a fast starter, having won seven of his eight professional MMA fights in the first round. He will need to push the pace against Dos Santos, who will likely be more content to sit back and fight from the outside, but will need to ensure he doesn’t waste his energy in case the fight makes it into the later rounds.

Dos Santos to win via TKO/KO

Seven of JDS’s 13 UFC wins have come via TKO/KO, a sign of the striking power the Brazilian possesses. However, dos Santos has shown a preference for a more cautious, strategic approach to his most recent fights, as shown by his recent wins against Ivanov and Ben Rothwell, both of whom are powerful strikers and proven finishers like Tuivasa.

Because of this, we believe Dos Santos will not look for the TKO in this fight, and think there are other better lines to bet on in this match.

Tuivasa to win via TKO/KO

This will be Tuivasa’s first five-round fight in his MMA career, and he will likely have his hands full against a fighter with extensive experience in fighting the full 25 minutes. Dos Santos has been finished on the feet before, notably in his most recent losses and Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem.

That, coupled with Tuivasa’s power, shows that a TKO/KO victory for the Australian is certainly possible. Tuivasa may need to eat some of JDS’s shots in order to get inside and land one of his famous hooks on the Brazilian’s chin. If he is successful in doing this, a bet on a Tuivasa TKO/KO victory may pay off for the brave punter.

Our Verdict – dos Santos via decision

Despite criticism of JDS’s losses in the Octagon, they have come to the best heavyweight fighters of the time. The fact is Dos Santos remains a top tier fighter, and that will show in this fight as he out- boxes and out-foxes Tuivasa to take out a dominant decision victory.
