Chan Sung Jung vs. Yair Rodriguez

UFC Fight Night 139 is set to be headlined by a Featherweight battle between ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung and rising prospect Yair Rodriguez. It will be an intriguing fight, with both fighters not having fought in the Octagon since the first half of 2017.

Jung vs. Rodriguez Betting Tips

Jung comes in as a marginal favourite to in this contest. You can back him with odds of 3/4. Rodriguez looks better value for money at odds of 6/5.

Chan Sung Jung to win outright

He has only fought once since 2013, mainly due to fulfilling his mandatory South Korean military service, but also more recently due to injuries, but Jung’s entertaining style makes him a favourite among the UFC brass. Jung’s ability to take punishment and fast-paced style contribute to that status, and they have also been major factors behind his 14 MMA wins.

In Rodriguez, Jung will face a highly technical striker with a high amount of hype and confidence. However, Rodriguez showed that he was vulnerable on the ground in his last fight against Frankie Edgar, and if Jung can also exploit this, he may be the one with his hand raised after the fight.

Yair Rodriguez to win outright

Having replaced Frankie Edgar on short notice to fight Jung, this will be the fight for Rodriguez since May 2017. The 26-year-old Mexican has made a name for his flashy, technical striking, which has gained him four post-fight awards out of seven UFC fights.

On paper, the Korean Zombie will be one of Rodriguez’s biggest challenges in his career so far, perhaps second to Frankie Edgar, a bout in which the Mexican was dominated. Jung’s style plays well into Rodriguez’s technical approach, however, so a bet on a Rodriguez win is one that could yield a good payday.

Rodriguez to win by TKO/KO

Despite his growing reputation as a dangerous striker, only two of Rodriguez’s six UFC wins come via TKO/KO. That would seem to be music to Jung’s ears, who only has two losses via TKO/KO, which is amazing considering how much damage he tends to take in his fights.

Given that this fight is a five-rounder, though, Rodriguez will have plenty of opportunities to land one his flashy kicks if he is able to conserve his energy throughout the fight better than Jung can conserve his.

Fight to go the distance

While there is a major chance of Rodriguez winning via TKO/KO, there is also a major possibility the fight could last the whole five rounds. Jung has fought until the fourth round twice, but his cardio should hold up if he picks his shots instead of brawling against Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has fought all five rounds once – a decision win against Alex Caceres, but he will need to avoid the constant pressure from the Korean Zombie if he is to last the full five rounds.

Our Prediction – Yair Rodriguez Win Outright

We love the Korean Zombie’s “never say die” approach to fighting and the heart he displays in the Octagon. However, his brawling style can often get over-sloppy, which we think Rodriguez will take advantage of and ultimately finish Jung with crisp counter strikes.

Mike Perry vs. Donald Cerrone

The co-main event of UFC Fight Night 139 is a welterweight battle between veteran Donald Cerrone and flamboyant rising star Mike Perry. Both fighters have briefly trained together in the past, which makes this bout all the more interesting.

Perry vs. Cerrone Betting Tips

Cowboy is being all but written off by the bookmakers for taking the victory. Tipping him to beat Perry gets you odds of 19/10. Backing Perry, as unpredictable as he is, is rewarded with short betting odds of 1/2, which are likely to remain fixed leading up to the fight.

Mike Perry to win outright

Mike Perry’s brash and loud nature outside the Octagon has often been backed up by his power and speed inside of it. That said, he has lost to fighters who have shown little fear of his strength and who have used technical striking to one-up Perry in their matches.

Perry showed some improvement in this area against Felder, though, showing that his move to Jackson’s MMA gym has been a positive one. He will need to catch Cerrone early though, given that he has shown a tendency to be more dangerous as the fight goes on.

Donald Cerrone to win outright

Traditionally one of the most active fighters on the UFC roster, Cerrone will be fighting for the first time since June. There have been a lot of changes for him since then, including a departure from the Jackson’s gym as well as the birth of his first child.

It will be interesting to see if those changes have affected Cerrone in the Octagon, where he had already begun facing a decline in recent years. If he is able to avoid the early onslaught of Perry and find his range as the fight progresses, Cerrone may just find himself back in the winner’s column.

Perry to win by TKO/KO

It is no secret that the recent years have not been kind to Cerrone’s chin. Three of his last five losses have ended via TKO, with two of those coming in the first round. While Perry’s main criticism has been his lack of cardio due to his ‘balls-to-the-wall’ approach from the opening bell, this may just be the best approach to beat Cerrone.

Perry will have to watch for the technical counters of Cerrone, but if he is able to avoid his shots while pressuring him early, an early TKO victory just may eventuate for Platinum.

Cerrone to win by Submission

He’s widely known for his striking, but with 16 his 33 victories coming via submission, it can be argued that Cowboy is even better on the ground. Cerrone has successfully taken the grappling approach to opponents with a striking base, including Alex Oliveira, Edson Barboza and Evan Dunham.

He will need to do the same to Perry – especially in the early stages of the match – if he is to win the fight. There’s no guarantee that Cerrone will try and take the fight to the ground, but if he does, there’s a huge chance he’ll be able to submit Perry.

Our Prediction – Mike Perry Win Outright

He is far from the fighter he used to be, but Cerrone will avoid the early onslaught from Perry and come back strong in the later rounds to take out a close – possibly even a split – decision. However, we won’t be surprised in the slightest if Perry is able to find Cerrone’s chin early in the fight.

Raquel Pennington vs Germaine de Randamie

A women’s bantamweight bout with potential top contender ramifications is set to take place on the main card of UFC Fight Night 139 as former title challenger Raquel Pennington takes on one-time UFC Featherweight Champion Germaine de Randamie. De Randamie will hope to extend her win streak while Pennington will aim to get back into the winner’s column following her failed title challenge against Amanda Nunes.

Pennington vs de Randamie Betting Tips

Thinking of betting on this UFC event?de Randamie  is making headlines as the frontrunner for victory going on the lay of the odds online. The Dutch kickboxer comes in at 5/7 to win outright.

Tipping Pennington to win by any means necessary gives betting odds of 11/8, presenting the more attractive offering for your stake.

Pennington to win outright

Pennington’s best performances have come when she has employed constant movement and accurate pinpoint striking mixed in with grappling. She will need to employ this very same game plan against de Randamie, whose kickboxing prowess means she will overwhelm Pennington if she is anything but a moving target.

That said, Pennington will likely have the edge over de Randamie on the ground, so if she can take de Randamie down, there is a definite possibility she can win the fight.

De Randamie to win outright

This will be the first fight for de Randamie since her successful Featherweight title win back in February 2017. She has since vacated that belt and moved back down to 135 pounds. De Randamie’s best chances of winning are if she keeps the fight standing and throws those famous powerful, pinpoint strikes from distance for which she is best known. The ‘Iron Lady’ is also known to use the clinch in many of her fights. She can try and clinch against Pennington in an effort to soften her up with knees, but she will need to be extra wary of being taken down if she does so.

De Randamie to win by TKO/KO

With two of her three UFC Bantamweight victories coming via TKO, de Randamie obviously has vicious power in her strikes. On the other side of the coin, only one of Pennington’s six losses has come via TKO, which was her last fight against Nunes, who is perhaps one of the best KO artists in women’s MMA.

Given de Randamie’s power, it may be worth putting a small bet on a TKO win, but there are better betting lines to place your money on when it comes to this fight.

Fight to go the Distance

Fourteen out of Pennington and de Randamie’s combined 25 MMA fights have gone to the judge’s scorecards, a clear sign that both fighters can take punishment just as well as they can dish it out. It also helps to show that both fighters tend to more calculated and strategic in their game plans, rather than simply employ a ‘head hunting’ approach.

Because of that, we think a bet on this fight going into the hands of the judges will be a good one to make, and could yield a nice little win for the punter.

Our Prediction – De Randamie Win Outright

Both Pennington and de Randamie are high calibre strikers, but de Randamie is simply more experienced and has far more power. This will make all the difference as the former Featherweight champion will out strike Pennington and earn the clear decision victory.
