You have to love the balls on Billy Joe Saunders. The British middleweight champion lept into a ruthless attack on pound-for-pound contender Canelo after news spread that the Mexican was caught up in a doping scandal.
Just recently, it was revealed that Saul Canelo Alvarez was popped for an unusual substance in his system when undergoing routine voluntary testing. And Saunders wasted no time in getting in a low blow about the proceedings on his social media platforms.
Canelo gave a positive result for traces of clenbuterol, which his training camp quickly dismissed as an unfortunate mix-up with meat contamination that had impacted dozens of other Mexican athletes.
“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” responded Alvarez.
“I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”
But rather than let the matter lie fellow middleweight superstar Billy Joe Saunders jumped on the hype wagon to post a series of controversial statements about the saga.
“Canelo your a drug cheat can’t bulk like that,” Saunders commented on Instagram. He then followed the outburst by calling out current title holder Golovkin in the status update: “@gggboxing let’s fight boreRat”.
Canelo is due to fight Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan on May 5 in a long-awaited rematch and the minor setback involving the Mexican’s test results are unlikely to hamper the event in any way.
As an extra precaution, the Canelo training camp has been moved from Mexico to the United States.
