‘Hades’ Has Quietly Become One Of The Best Reviewed Games Of The Year

You probably you think you know what the best-reviewed games of 2020 are at this point, as they contain long-running series or AAA blockbusters, or both. But you may not realize that flying under the radar is one game in particular, Hades, right now only on PC and Nintendo Switch, which is actually one of the highest-scoring games of the year, something both critics and fans agree on.

According to Metacritic, Hades currently has a 91 on PC from critics and a 9.2 from fans. On Switch, those numbers are even higher, a 94 from critics and a 9.5 from fans (albeit with fewer scores in).

That puts Hades in some truly astonishingly good company for all of 2020. Here’s how it falls on the list of the highest rated games of the year, if we’re using the PC score (17 reviews versus 5 for Switch):

1. Persona 5 Royal – 95

2. The Last of Us Part II – 93

3. Half-Life Alyx – 93

4. Microsoft Flight Simulator – 92

5. Hades – 91

6. Spelukny 2 – 91

7. F1 2020 – 91

8. Crusader Kings III – 91

9. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 91

10. Ori and the Will of the Wisps – 90

That’s across all platforms, PC, VR, Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. And as of right now, it has the highest user score out of any of them.

Hades

Supergiant

Hades is a game from Supergiant, behind other hits like Bastion and Transistor, but as acclaimed as those games were (especially Bastion), Hades seems to be hitting even harder. The Greek mythology-themed roguelike seems to have checked every box for players and critics, and I’ve heard a few prominent people saying that it’s absolutely in GOTY contention, if not their own personal GOTY outright. So if you haven’t checked it out yet, it might be the time to. Hades has been in early access for a long time now, but its true “release” is here, and now it’s attracting the attention it deserves.

I’m not clear on what the plans for Hades might be on Xbox or PlayStation heading into next gen, but it will probably land on both platforms eventually. For now, this is definitely a reason to pick up your Switch again after Animal Crossing burnout, or on PC if you’d rather play it there. This is one to keep an eye on, and don’t let it pass you by.
